Beginning my career at KPMG provided me with a platform to pursue my academic interests in performance management, business process improvement and human capital development in a professional setting. Working within specialized teams across various industries on varied assignments I was able to gain valuable industry insights and cultivate skill sets that would eventually enable me to start my own management consultancy company serving a small group of contractors in the dredging industry.

From relatively humble beginnings, myself and a dynamic team of project management professionals assembled under my stewardship have grown from strength to strength and now oversee operational management of one of the largest privately owned dredging companies in South Asia, playing an active role in the development of Bangladesh by implementing large scale marine and riverine infrastructure development projects.

I am an inquisitive soul, a budding entrepreneur, a firm believer of conscientious leadership and in the indomitable nature of the human spirit.

What are the best practices for farming Maize?

WRITTEN BY
M. ASHRAFUL ISLAM

Maize farming in Bangladesh involves several recommended practices to ensure optimal yield and productivity. These practices include:

1. Land Preparation: Select well-drained fertile soil and prepare the land by ploughing and harrowing to create a fine tilth for sowing.

2. Seed Selection: Choose high-quality, disease-free hybrid or improved maize seeds suitable for local growing conditions.

3. Sowing: Optimal sowing time is during the monsoon season, typically from June to July. Use appropriate planting techniques such as line sowing or dibbling, and maintaining proper spacing between plants.

4. Fertilization: Conduct soil testing to determine nutrient deficiencies and apply organic manure or balanced fertilizers based on the recommended dosages. Apply nitrogenous fertilizers in split doses to ensure efficient nutrient uptake.

5. Irrigation: Provide regular irrigation, especially during dry periods, to ensure adequate moisture for proper growth and development. Maize requires consistent soil moisture throughout the growing season.

6. Weed Control: Implement effective weed management practices, including pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicide application or manual weeding to minimize weed competition.

7. Pest and Disease Management: Monitor and control common pests and diseases such as stem borers, armyworms, and maize diseases (e.g., leaf blight, rust) through integrated pest management practices, including cultural, biological, and chemical methods.

8. Crop Rotation: Practice crop rotation with leguminous crops or other non-maize crops to break pest and disease cycles and maintain soil fertility.

9. Harvesting: Harvest maize when the cobs are fully mature, characterized by dry husks and hard kernels. Properly handle and store harvested maize to minimize post-harvest losses.

10. Post-Harvest Management: Dry and store maize in well-ventilated spaces to prevent moisture-induced spoilage. Properly package and market the harvested maize to ensure better returns.

Maize farmers in Bangladesh need to stay updated with the latest agricultural practices, attend training programs, and seek guidance from agricultural extension services to maximize their yield and profitability.
